Erasmus study abroad outside EU/EEA
A few departments at AAU have applied for and been awarded projects under the Erasmus+ program, which have been extended to certain countries outside Europe. Read here which departments and the requirements for you as a student.

This agreement is limited to AAU students on the following institutions
- Architecture and Design
- Planning
- Energy
New funds can be applied annually. We will update the overview at the end of September with any new departments.
Erasmus study abroad outside EU/EEA
The Erasmus+ programme outside the EU/EEA is an EU education and scholarship programme aimed at AAU students at selected departments (see below) who wish to take an integrated part of their education at selected partner institutions outside the EU/EEA.
AAU has applied for and been awarded an Erasmus Charter for Higher Education. A few years ago, the Erasmus+ programme was extended to certain countries outside Europe. This makes it possible for AAU students from:
- Department of Architecture and Design
- Department of Planning
- Department of Energy
- to study abroad at selected partner universities outside the EU/EEA and even apply for an Erasmus+ grant.
This page contains everything that is special for an Erasmus study period outside the EU/EEA, but as this is in many ways similar to all other study periods at a partner university, it is important that you start by reading this page:
- You must be a student at AAU at the Department of Architecture and Media Technology, the Department of Planning (only master's level), or the Department of Energy.
- You must choose an Erasmus+ agreement outside EU/EEA concluded by your study board
- The study period must be an integrated part of your education and you must apply for advance credit from your study board
- The study period must last between 3 - 12 months
- You must have completed and signed an 'Erasmus Learning Agreement for Studies' and it must be uploaded to the International Office's online system before the study period begins
How to find the Erasmus+ agreements outside the EU/EEA that are relevant to you
The agreement must be entered into by your study board - so remember to search for your study board when you search the database with our Collaboration Agreements.
How to fill in the search criteria:
- Choose the desired semester: Complete with the semester you would like to go abroad
- Choose your study board: Fill in with your study board
- Select country: MUST BE BLANK
- Select University: MUST BE BLANK
- Agreement type: Erasmus – KA107 / Erasmus - KA171
AAU has entered into this type of agreement with very few universities. Therefore, the search result will be very limited.
Once you have found an interesting university, click on the appointment and a pop-up box will appear. Here you will find more information about the agreement. Pay special attention to whether there are restrictions, e.g. that the agreement is exclusively for a specific field of study. It could be an agreement entered into by the Study Board for Architecture and Design, but the agreement is exclusively for Industrial Design students.
Once you have found a relevant appointment, you apply for the place. Also, send an email to internationaloffice@aau.dk that you have applied for the place.
It is your responsibility to be covered by proper insurance during your stay abroad. Aalborg University (AAU) has no insurance, which covers students going abroad.
It is very important that you thoroughly familiarize yourself with a number of matters regarding insurance before you leave. In particular, you should pay attention to whether you are covered in relation to:
- Sickness/health (both physical and mental diseases)
- Liability
- Accident
- Baggage
Required insurance
When you go abroad to study with the Erasmus+ program it is a requirement that you are covered by at least health insurance.
The Blue EU Health Insurance Card
Concerning the health insurance: If you are an EU citizen you may already have the blue EU Health Insurance Card, but please note the following:
The blue card gives you access to medically necessary, state-provided healthcare during a temporary stay in any of the 28 EU countries, Iceland, Lichtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland, under the same conditions and at the same cost (free in some countries) as people insured in that country.
The card can be obtained from the Citizen Service in your municipality of residence. You can also order the card on www.lifeindenmark.dl
The blue EU-health insurance card is not to be considered a travel insurance
It is important to pay attention to the fact, that the EU-health insurance card is not an alternative to travel insurance.
- It does not cover any private healthcare or costs such as a return flight to your home country or lost/stolen property,
- It does not cover your costs if you are traveling for the express purpose of obtaining medical treatment,
- it does not guarantee free services. As each country’s healthcare system is different; services that cost nothing at home might not be free in another country.
Examples of private insurance companies
We recommend you contact your private insurance company (or the examples listed below) to ensure that you are covered according to the requirements of the European Commission:

When your Erasmus+ stay is coming to an end, there are several things for you to remember:
- Have the last part: 'After the Mobility' filled in and signed before you leave the partner university.
- Fulfil the second language assessment from the Erasmus+ OLS. A link is sent to your AAU student email.
- Answer the online survey: Erasmus+ Participant Report. A link is sent to your AAU student email.
- Hand in your Transcript of Records from the partner university to your secretary/Study Board and the International Office (IO).
- Both the Learning Agreement and the Transcript of Record must be uploaded to International Office's online system.
NB! For students who received an Erasmus+ grant: If you fail to do the above-mentioned things, the International Office has the right to reimburse the grant.
