The unemployment fund (A-kasse) is your gateway to daily allowance and guidance when you are looking for a job.
One of AAU's career counsellors' most important tips for you as a student is to sign up for an unemployment fund.
There are many advantages, but the most important one is that it secures you financially if you were to be without a job when you graduate.
And you can just as well register in good time - and no later than 1 year before you graduate. This means you avoid the waiting period, during which you cannot receive unemployment benefits for the first month. It is money straight into your pocket.
There are different rules for the rights to unemployment benefit for e.g., EU citizens and non-EU citizens under the age of 30. Contact your unemployment insurance fund to get the specific rules for your situation.
There is almost no reason not to enroll in an unemployment fund in good time. It is free if you are under 30 (it's statutory that you have to pay for membership if you're over 30).
And then you can enjoy all the free benefits already while you are a student.
There is a difference between the offers, but it can be, e.g.:
Many bachelor students think that it is way ahead in the future it becomes relevant to consider unemployment benefit - but maybe not? Have you considered whether you should continue your studies at all?
If you want to look for a job when you complete your bachelor's degree, you should also register at least 1 year in advance, so that you can receive unemployment benefit from day 1.
So, consider it one more time. Even if you expect to study a master's degree, anything can happen that makes you choose something else.
What is an unemployment insurance fund (a-kasse)?
If you do not have a job after graduation, you might be entitled to receive unemployment benefit, depending on your citizenship and other rules.
Being a member of an unemployment fund can secure you financially in the transition between student life and working life. Membership of a unemployment fund is decisive for whether you can receive unemployment benefit - otherwise you will receive cash assistance as unemployed.
You can be a student member of an unemployment insurance fund for free while you study (however a maximum of 5 years as a student) if you are under 30 years old.
Always ask your unemployment insurance fund for the specific rules that are relevant for you!
